Exhausted, Overwhelmed, Uninspired? You Might Be Resting The Wrong Way

July 28, 2025

Last week, I took things a little slower because my body and mind asked me to and I realized I could count on my hand the number of times in one hand when I have truly honoured this need without guilt.

And slowing down (truly slowing down) wasn’t as easy as it sounds.

Not at first.

The moment I tried to rest, my nervous system panicked.

My thoughts spun:
“Shouldn’t you be doing something?”
“You’re wasting time.”
“You’ll fall behind.”

That familiar cocktail of guilt, anxiety, and fear stirred up like a storm cloud over what was meant to be a moment of peace.

But here’s what I realized:

Slowing down isn’t what exhausts us. Resisting it is.

We can’t create space for what’s calling to us. Be it our next creative idea, our intuition, or our peace, if we treat rest as a reward we haven’t earned yet.

So instead of forcing myself to “be calm” or “do nothing,” I asked one powerful question:

What kind of rest do I actually need right now?

It turns out, there are 7 different types of rest and most of us are only tending to one (usually sleep). No wonder we’re still tired after a full night in bed.

Here’s what I uncovered and how you can bring these micro-moments of healing into your own week:

🌊 The 7 Types of Rest & How to Nurture Each One

Type of RestWhy It MattersHow to Practice
Physical RestYour body carries tension and fatigue from your current pace.Take a restorative yoga class, stretch before bed, or nap guilt-free.
Mental RestConstant thinking clutters your inner world.Pause mid-day. Close your eyes. Take 3 deep breaths. Go for a walk or use a journal as a “thought-dump”. It doesn’t have to make sense, let it out without analyzing or lingering.
Emotional RestBottled-up emotions become heavy over time.Speak your truth without editing. Journal for 5 minutes. Let your feelings out on paper. (Leave self judgement at the door)
Creative RestBurnout stifles your imagination.Walk in nature. Watch clouds. Visit an art gallery. Daydream.
Social RestEven good company can feel draining.Spend time with those who nourish you or choose intentional solitude to recharge.
Sensory RestYour nervous system needs relief from screens, noise, and stimuli.Unplug for 15 minutes. Turn off notifications. Sit in silence or low light.
Spiritual RestYou may be longing for connection, meaning, or presence.Meditate. Pray. Read something soul-nourishing. Spend time in nature or start a small ritual (scented oils, soft lighting and an intentional full body stretch)

You don’t have to check off all 7 every day. But simply asking yourself:

“Which type of rest am I missing right now?”
is often enough to begin the shift.

So if you’re feeling:

  • Unmotivated even after a weekend “off”
  • Overstimulated by the smallest decisions
  • Disconnected from your creative self

You’re not broken, undisciplined, or lazy.

You’re simply missing a kind of rest your soul is craving.

So instead of forcing change, what if we created space for it?

Rest IS the foundation that your transformation rises from.

Let’s honour that together.

Sending you love,

Katherine

P.S. If you’re ready to go deeper and explore what it means to rest in ways that align with your natural rhythm, Creative Paths to Peace waitlist is open and starting up again this September, 2025. It’s not about doing more, it’s about remembering who you’ve always been beneath the noise, the overwhelm, and the control.
