Both paths can hit your financial goals.
Only one feels like gold on the inside
Dec 16
We don’t talk about this enough in business spaces:
The truth that many of us built our businesses from survival.
From pressure.
From fear.
From “I have to make this work.”
And it worked.
The sales and clients came.
The numbers grew.
The goals got crossed off the list.
But if you’re honest… it still felt heavy.
Like no matter how much success you created, it came at a cost.
Your nervous system. Your peace. Your joy.
That’s the sign you were building from protector parts.
What are protector parts?
In IFS (Internal Family Systems), protectors are parts of you that step in to keep you safe—especially in moments that feel emotionally threatening or overwhelming.
They formed in response to pain, trauma, or unmet needs.
They believe their job is to keep you from being hurt again.
So they manage, control, perform, overwork, or shut down to protect the more vulnerable parts inside of you.
And in business?
They’re often the ones running the show.
Common protector parts in business:
- The Perfectionist – “If I get it just right, I’ll avoid criticism.”
- The Over-Achiever – “If I keep producing, I’ll finally be enough.”
- The People-Pleaser – “If I keep everyone happy, I’ll be safe.”
- The Hustler – “If I don’t stop, nothing bad can catch me.”
- The Quiet One – “If I shrink, I won’t be rejected.”
- The Avoidant – “If I don’t look at it, it can’t hurt me.”
- The Procrastinator – “If I delay, I can’t fail (or be judged).”
They helped you survive.
They helped you succeed.
But they weren’t meant to lead.
Here’s the hard truth:
Protectors can get you to your financial goals.
But they can’t let you feel safe in success.
You can build a profitable business from hustle, over-functioning, and proving your worth.
But it won’t feel sustainable.
It won’t feel fulfilling.
And you’ll always be one step away from burnout or shutdown.
Because your nervous system never gets the message that it’s safe to stop.
So what’s the shift?
The shift isn’t about “fixing” yourself.
It’s about creating space for your Self energy—the calm, confident, connected part of you IFS refers to as the natural leader within—to take the lead.
When your protectors feel seen and supported (instead of judged or forced out),
they relax.
They soften.
They take on new roles that serve your present—not just your past.
And that’s where business begins to feel different.
More creative.
More peaceful.
More you.
Let me be clear:
We don’t get rid of our protectors.
We just need to stop letting them drive your business and your life.
When you build from Self—not survival—everything shifts:
- You market without feeling like you’re performing.
- You rest without guilt.
- You stop proving, and start leading.
Because now, you’re not bracing for failure.
You’re building from wholeness.
Both paths can hit your financial goals.
Only one will feel like gold on the inside.
Let’s build from that.
